Blankets and throws
A throw is the cheapest single piece of decor that can change a room. Drape one over the arm of the sofa, fold one at the foot of the bed, and the room reads finished. The buying decisions are weight, texture, and how often you'll actually use it (versus how often it'll sit decoratively on a sofa).
Weight: throws split into two camps. Light cotton, linen and bamboo throws (200-400gsm) are summer pieces, useful as bed-foot decoration and for cooler-evening cover on the sofa. Heavy wool, fleece and chunky-knit throws (500gsm-plus) are winter pieces, properly warm enough to sit under for a film. Most households want one of each.
Material:
- Wool: warmest, most durable, ages well. £40-£200 for a quality throw.
- Cashmere or cashmere-blend: the upper-tier soft option. £100-£400.
- Cotton and cotton-blend: washable, summer weight, mid-priced. £20-£80.
- Fleece and faux fur: warm, washable, family-friendly. £15-£50.
- Chunky knit: visually substantial, decorative-first. Sheds in the first wash, looks lovely until then.
Sizing follows the use. Sofa throws want to drape over an arm with 30cm to spare on each side: 130x150cm or 150x200cm work for most British sofas. Bed-foot throws want to span the foot of the bed plus a 30cm overhang: 200x220cm for a king, 230x250cm for a super-king. Single-person lap throws (the size you actually use under) are 130x170cm.
Care matters. Wool throws need cool gentle wash or dry cleaning; pure cashmere is dry-clean-only on the higher specs. Cotton and fleece wash hot. Chunky-knit pieces wash hand-only or not at all on some yarns.
