Upholstered bed frames

An upholstered bed frame puts a fabric-covered headboard, side rails and footboard around a slatted or sprung base. The combination is softer to lean against, quieter than metal frames, and adds visual warmth that wooden and metal frames don't deliver. The trade-off is that the upholstery shows wear over years, particularly the headboard.

Construction: solid-wood frame underneath the upholstery is the spec to look for. The fabric is what you see; the timber is what holds shape over time. Glued-plywood frames in the £200-£400 bracket creak and twist after a few years. Hardwood frames cost £100-£200 more and outlast the cheaper version by a decade.

Headboard styles:

  • Plain panel: flat, contemporary, minimal. The cleanest look.
  • Channel-stitched: vertical or horizontal stitched lines. Reads more designed.
  • Tufted (button-back): traditional, formal, more classical.
  • Curved or arched: softens the bed line, suits feminine and country interiors.
  • Tall headboards (130cm-plus): statement piece, lifts small bedrooms.

Fabric: linen and linen-blend are the dominant choices, neutral and durable. Velvet adds depth and reads more luxurious but shows marks. Faux leather wipes clean but cracks at the seams over five-plus years. Bouclé is the contemporary upgrade, textural and warm. Removable, washable covers are worth the £80-£150 premium where offered, particularly on light colours.

Storage: ottoman storage variants add the deep under-bed cavity that turns the frame into wardrobe-equivalent storage. The gas-strut mechanism handles a king-size mattress comfortably; check the rating on super-king and emperor sizes.
