Single Beds

Updated

We list over 5,800 single beds here from The Range, Robert Dyas, Furniture in Fashion and other UK retailers. A single at 3ft (90×190cm) is the working size for kids' rooms, guest rooms, small flats and any space that has to do more than one job.

What to compare. Mattress fit first: every UK mattress vendor stocks the 3ft size, so you're not boxed in later. Under-bed clearance second: 16cm is the floor for storage boxes, 20cm makes vacuuming easier. Headboard finish third, if the bed sits against a painted wall: wood and metal mark the paint less than upholstery does. Below £100 you're in flat-pack with thin MDF and tape-on edges; £150-£300 is where solid pine, slatted bases that don't sag inside a year and finishes that survive a teenager's bedroom start appearing.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a UK single bed?
A UK single bed measures 3ft (90cm) wide by 6ft 3in (190cm) long. The mattress is the same size. It is the standard size for one sleeper from about age 4 upwards, and the most-stocked mattress size at every major UK retailer.
When do kids move from a toddler bed to a single?
Most UK families make the move between 4 and 6 years old. The triggers are usually outgrown length (toddler beds are 140cm long, singles are 190cm) or the child climbing in and out competently. Some families skip the toddler step entirely and go from cot to single around age 3.
Can two children share a single bed?
For one or two nights, children up to about age 7 share a single for a sleepover without much trouble. As a regular sleeping setup it is too narrow: 90cm divided is 45cm per child, less than a standard cot mattress per child.
