What age is a mid sleeper bed suitable for?
Most mid sleepers are designed for ages 6 to 12. BS EN 747, the UK and European safety standard, sets the minimum age for the upper sleeping platform at 6, the same as for bunk beds. Below 6, even a mid sleeper height (around 100cm to 110cm to mattress base) is too high for safe night-time climbing. Above 12, ceiling clearance becomes the binding constraint.
How much ceiling clearance does a mid sleeper need?
Around 70cm to 90cm above the mattress for the child to sit up comfortably. Total room height needed is roughly 220cm to 230cm for a standard mid sleeper. Measure floor to ceiling before ordering; sloped or coombed ceilings reduce usable space dramatically and rule out most mid sleepers in attic-conversion bedrooms.
