Kettles

Updated

A kettle is the British kitchen essential, used 6-15 times a day in most households. Boil time matters: 1.5-2.5kW is the practical wattage, with 3kW pushing the maximum 13A socket draw. Aosom UK, Cherry Lane Garden Centres and Fulfilora between them cover £1-£300 across the range. Capacity: 1L (single-person flat), 1.5-1.7L (household standard, boils 5-7 cups at once), 2L+ (large household or entertaining). Material: stainless steel (the long-life pick, doesn't scratch); plastic-bodied (cheaper, can taint water taste over time); glass (visible water level, matches contemporary kitchens but harder to clean limescale). Variable-temperature kettles (set boil temp 70-100C) suit households drinking different teas at different temps; standard kettles only boil to 100C. Look for water-level windows, removable limescale filters, and rapid-boil one-cup function. Energy-saving kettles boil only the volume you set.
