Frequently asked questions

What age is a high sleeper suitable for?
Age 8 and up. BS EN 747 (the UK and European safety standard) sets a hard floor of age 6 for any raised sleeping platform; high sleepers (mattress base 150cm-plus from the floor) typically need age 8 for safe climb-down at night. Below that, a mid sleeper (100 to 110cm) is the safer choice.
How much ceiling height does a high sleeper need?
240cm minimum, 250cm-plus comfortable. Total bed-frame height is around 175cm, plus the mattress (15cm) and 60 to 75cm of sit-up clearance above. Coombed or sloped attic ceilings rule out high sleepers for most British loft conversions; check at the highest point of the ceiling before ordering.
Are high sleepers safe for adults?
Yes, for adults under 100kg sleeping in dorm rooms, studios or shared houses. Adult-rated high sleepers (Flair Furniture, X Rocker, Noomi) carry the BS EN 747 spec but with reinforced posts and ladders for repeated nightly climbing. The two real risks are needing the bathroom at night and the climb getting harder year-on-year after age 40.
High sleeper with desk versus with wardrobe?
Desk for primary-school children (8 to 11) who need a homework space the bed frees up. Wardrobe for secondary-school children (11-plus) and adults who need clothes storage in a small bedroom. Some high sleepers combine both (Flair, Stompa); they cost £400 to £700 against £250 to £450 for desk-only models.
How long does a high sleeper bed last?
8 to 12 years for solid-wood frames (oak, pine); 5 to 8 for metal frames. The wear point is the ladder rungs and the rail joints, which loosen with daily climbing. Tighten the bolts every 6 months and the frame survives a child's whole school-age years. Mattress is replaced separately on the usual 7-to-8-year mattress cycle.
