Double wardrobes: what to look for

A double wardrobe is the standard British wardrobe size: two doors, around 90 to 110cm wide, 55 to 60cm deep, and 180 to 200cm tall. It's the wardrobe that holds one adult's hanging clothes plus shelving for folded items, or split between two adults if the bedroom can't fit a triple.

Internal layout matters more than external dimensions. The standard split is roughly two-thirds long-hang on one side, one-third short-hang plus shelving on the other. Look for adjustable shelves and an adjustable rail height so the layout can match your wardrobe rather than the manufacturer's assumption.

Door type: hinged doors are standard but need 60cm of clear floor space in front of the wardrobe to swing open. Sliding doors save that swing space and suit narrow bedrooms. Mirrored sliding doors do double duty as a full-length dressing mirror.

Construction: solid oak in honey or weathered finishes is the long-term default. Painted MDF (Bridstow Blue, Charcoal Grey, Stone) suits modern country styles and shows fewer marks than solid wood. White-on-white reads contemporary and visually disappears, useful in small rooms.

Depth: 55cm minimum so a winter coat hangs straight without the door catching. 60cm is the comfortable spec. Anything shallower and the door won't close on a thick coat.
