Log Burners
Updated
A log burner, or wood-burning stove, is the proper open-flame heating piece: cast-iron or steel body, glass-fronted firebox, flue out through the chimney or wall. The category has narrowed since the 2022 Defra Eco-design regulations; new stoves sold in the UK from January 2022 must meet stringent emissions standards (the "Ecodesign Ready" badge). Aosom UK, Cheaper-Online.co.uk and Cherry Lane Garden Centres between them cover £3-£1,199 across the range. Heat output: 4kW stoves heat a 25-30 sq m room; 8kW heats a 40-50 sq m room or a poorly-insulated cottage; 12kW heats a large open-plan space. Multi-fuel stoves (burn wood AND smokeless coal) suit areas where wood supply is unreliable; wood-only stoves run cleaner. The flue installation is what makes log-burner installs cost £1,500-£3,500 plus the stove itself; air-vent requirements add to the build. Defra-approved stoves are the legal pick in smoke-control areas.
