Narrow wardrobes: what to look for

Narrow wardrobes (typically 30 to 60cm wide) are the answer for awkward corners, alcoves beside chimney breasts, narrow bedrooms, and any space where a standard double wardrobe won't fit. The brief is different: vertical storage in tight footprint rather than broad layout.

Sizing: narrow wardrobes split into two common widths. 30 to 40cm is single-door, single-hang only, useful for shoes, narrow shelving, or hanging short items like shirts and blouses. 50 to 60cm is the common "small bedroom" width, with one full-length hanging rail plus a top shelf, fitting a row of adult hanging clothes minus the long coats.

Depth is the spec to check carefully. 50cm minimum so clothes hang properly; 55cm is comfortable. Many narrow wardrobes ship at 40cm depth (sold as space-savers) which leaves clothes pressing against the back panel and the door catching on hangers.

Configuration: short-hang single-rail (right for shirts, jackets, folded items below); full-length single-rail (right for dresses, coats); two-tier rails (right for kids' clothes or short tops in the upper rail with folded items below).

Layout pairing: two narrow wardrobes flanking a chest of drawers reads more considered than one wider piece in the same wall space, and gives you flexibility on internal layout.
