Shelves and shelving units

Shelves do practical storage and visual display in equal measure, and the proportions of the two jobs decide which type of shelving fits the room. Open bookcase shelving is mostly display. Closed-front cabinets are mostly storage. Floating wall shelves split the difference.

Bookcases and freestanding shelving units are the long-term answer for rooms with a real book or display collection. Solid-wood ladders and open-frame designs are bought for the look as much as the function. Sizing rule that works: ladder shelving narrower than 80cm reads under-scaled in any room over 14 square metres.

Floating wall shelves are the contemporary middle ground. Bracket-mounted (visible) brackets work for traditional rooms; concealed-bracket shelves read minimal and modern. Length matters: 60 to 120cm shelves read intentional; sub-60cm reads decorative-only and won't hold weight.

Cube and modular storage systems work in playrooms, kids' bedrooms and home offices. Buy more cubes than you think; the system tends to fill. White or light-oak finishes age better than dark stains.

Display shelves for plants, vinyl or ornaments are sized differently. Plant-specific shelving needs depth (25cm minimum so the pot fits without overhanging) and height clearance for what the plant grows into. Vinyl record shelving needs 32cm depth (the LP sleeve dimension) and weight tolerance - a foot of records weighs around 14kg.

Wall fixings are not optional on tall freestanding shelving units. Anchor strap or screw-fix to the wall at the top corner. The risk isn't fashion; it's a bookcase tipping onto a child.
