What to look for

Our awnings, canopies & gazebos listing covers the £13 to £16,822 bracket. Specs that matter are wind resistance (anchored or freestanding, ground-fixing kits where applicable), water resistance (the canopy fabric and drainage angle), and seasonal durability (UV-rated fabrics last 5-7 seasons; cheap polyester fades inside two).

Brands to know in this category

The brands that show up most often in our awnings, canopies & gazebos listing are Primrose, Sunjoy, TECTAKE, Forest and Forest Garden.

Frequently asked questions

What wind rating do garden awnings need in the UK?
Beaufort scale 5 (29 to 38 km/h) is the standard rating for retractable awnings; Beaufort 6-plus and the awning must be retracted to avoid frame damage. Storm-rated awnings with wind sensors (Sunjoy, Forest premium models) retract automatically. Free-standing gazebos need ground-fixing kits in any UK garden; the wind in February will lift an un-anchored one over the fence.
When should you retract a retractable awning?
Any time you are not actively under it, and always overnight. UV degrades the canopy fabric 2 to 3 times faster when left extended than when retracted between uses. Rain pooling on the canopy adds weight that stretches the frame. Retracting after each session adds 5 to 10 years to the canopy life and pays back the manual or motor effort.
Manual or electric garden awning: which to buy?
Manual (crank-handle) for awnings up to 3m wide; electric for anything larger or anywhere the user has reduced mobility. Electric adds £150 to £400 to the price plus an electrician install fee (£80 to £200). Optional wind sensors and remote controls bring the total to £600-plus over a manual equivalent. Manual is fine for most UK gardens.
Do I need planning permission for a garden gazebo or pergola?
Most domestic garden structures under 3m total height and away from the boundary fall under Permitted Development rules in England and do not need planning permission. Conservation areas, listed-building grounds and any structure over 3m tall do need to apply. Always check with the local planning office before ordering anything over £500; the rules vary by council.
How long does a garden awning canopy last?
5 to 10 years for the canopy fabric in average UK conditions; 15 to 25 years for the frame. The fabric is the consumable; replacement canopies cost £100 to £400 versus £500-plus for a whole new awning. UV-rated polyester (acrylic-coated) lasts at the longer end; cheap polyester (£100 to £200 awnings) fades and tears inside 2 to 3 seasons.
