Frequently asked questions

How wide should a chest of drawers be?
Match it to the wall it sits against. A 100cm-wide chest fits a single bedroom; 120 to 150cm for a double bedroom; 180cm-plus for a master bedroom. As a rule of thumb, the chest should occupy half to two-thirds of the wall length, leaving 30cm of clear space either side so the wall does not feel boxed in.
Do bedroom chests need to be secured to the wall?
Yes for any chest in a household with children under 6 or any chest over 75cm tall. BS EN 14749 (the UK furniture stability standard) recommends an anti-tip strap to the wall. Most flat-pack chests include the bracket. Without one, a child pulling open the top drawer can tip the chest forwards. Five-minute fix that prevents the most common nursery-furniture accident.
How many drawers do I actually need?
A two-adult bedroom typically wants 8 to 12 drawers split across two chests. Singles want 4 to 6. The rule that works in practice: one drawer per category (underwear, socks, t-shirts, jumpers, jeans, gym kit). Empty drawers attract clutter; under-filled drawers waste room footprint. Buy the smaller chest first and add a second if you outgrow it.
Solid wood or veneer-on-MDF for a bedroom chest?
Solid wood (oak, pine, walnut) for any chest you want to keep 10-plus years and possibly repair or refinish. Veneer-on-MDF for short-term and rental use; the veneer chips at the corners by year 3 and cannot be sanded back. Solid pine in the £200 to £400 range gives the longevity-per-pound sweet spot for most British bedrooms.
How much weight can a bedroom drawer hold?
A solid-wood drawer on metal runners holds 20 to 30kg evenly distributed. Particleboard drawers on plastic runners hold 8 to 15kg. The runners fail first, not the drawer. Stacking books, electronics or weights in a bedroom drawer wears the runners out fast; keep heavy items in floor-level wardrobe space instead.
