Frequently asked questions

What age does a child move from a cot to a single bed?
Most children move at 2 to 3 years, when they can climb out of the cot reliably. The Lullaby Trust guidance is age 18 months at the earliest, age 3 by the latest. Toddler beds (140 by 70cm) bridge the gap for tall toddlers who outgrow a cot but are not ready for a standard 90 by 190cm single.
What size is a UK toddler bed?
140cm long by 70cm wide, taking the same mattress as a cot (so the existing cot mattress carries over for the first year or two). Some longer toddler beds are 160cm by 80cm; check the dimension before ordering replacement bedding or a new mattress. Standard single bedding will not fit a toddler bed.
When should a child move from a toddler bed to a single bed?
Around age 5 to 6, when feet reach the end of the toddler bed. A standard 90 by 190cm UK single carries most children through to age 13 or 14. Going straight from cot to single saves a step but the child may roll out the first few months; bed rails (£15 to £30) handle that.
Are kids beds with storage worth the extra cost?
Yes in any bedroom under 12 square metres. The under-bed drawers replace 60 to 80cm of wardrobe footprint, freeing the floor for play space. Solid-pine ranges from Julian Bowen, Bedmaster and Noa and Nani add £80 to £150 over the equivalent flat-frame bed. The drawers outlast the bed; treat them as the long-term storage purchase.
What's the safest bed frame material for a child?
Solid wood (pine, beech or oak) on a slatted base, with rounded corners and no exposed metal screws at child height. Avoid metal-frame bunk-style single beds in households with toddlers; the cross bars at floor level catch toes. BS 8509 covers UK children's bed safety; reputable brands certify against it.
