Indoor Plants

Updated

Indoor plants live in a different climate to outdoor garden plants, central heating in winter dries them out, summer windows scorch them, and most British flats run too dim for sun-loving species. The realistic categories are low-light tolerators (snake plant, ZZ plant, pothos, philodendron, the working-flat staples), bright-but-indirect lovers (monstera, fiddle-leaf fig, parlor palm), and full-sun specialists (succulents, cacti). Aosom UK, Cherry Lane Garden Centres and Fulfilora between them cover £6-£150 across the range. Most domestic indoor plants ship in 9-15cm nursery pots; the first thing to do after delivery is check the drainage and consider repotting if the nursery pot drains poorly. Fiddle-leaf figs are the trickiest mass-market plant (notoriously sensitive to watering and light changes); snake plants and pothos are the forgiving picks for first-time owners.
