Bunk Beds

Updated

We list over 1,200 bunk beds here from The Range, Robert Dyas, Furniture in Fashion and other UK retailers. A bunk bed is the room-saver for shared kids' bedrooms and the most cost-effective way to sleep four in a 2-bed flat when the cousins visit.

The standard to look for: BS EN 747, the UK and European safety standard covering bunk-bed dimensions, guardrails and ladder gaps. Top bunks are not recommended for under-6s per the standard and most retailers' own product notes. Single-over-single is the common fit for shared kids' bedrooms or guest-room overflow. Single-over-double works for parent-and-child setups or older sibling sharing. Triple bunks with a perpendicular bottom suit larger rooms. Pine is lighter at the cost of finish; metal can rattle under movement; solid hardwood is heaviest but quietest and lasts a generation. Below £200 you're in pine or basic metal; £350 and up gets the quieter solid-wood builds.

Frequently asked questions

What age is safe for a top bunk?
BS EN 747, the UK and European safety standard, sets the floor at 6 years for the top bunk. Most UK retailers state the same on product pages. Below 6, the standard says the child should not sleep on the top regardless of the model.
How tall is a bunk bed?
Most domestic bunk beds are 150-170cm to the top of the upper mattress, with 65-90cm between the two mattresses. Check ceiling clearance: you want at least 65cm above the top mattress so a child can sit up. Standard UK bedroom ceilings are 2.4m, which fits comfortably.
What's the weight limit on a bunk bed?
UK domestic bunks tested to BS EN 747 typically carry 60-90kg per bunk depending on build (pine commonly 60kg, hardwood up to 120kg). Adult-rated bunks tested to 150kg+ exist but cost more. Check the manufacturer spec line before assuming an older sibling can use the top.
