Portable BBQs

Updated

A portable BBQ packs into a car boot for a beach day, picnic or camp pitch. The practical question is fuel choice. Portable charcoal works anywhere but needs a charcoal supply and a lighting plan; portable gas needs a small canister but lights instantly; portable electric needs a 13A socket which most picnic spots don't have. Sizes range from 30cm tabletop grills (cooks for two) to 50cm folded units (cooks for four). Aosom UK, Cheaper-Online.co.uk and Cherry Lane Garden Centres between them cover £10-£309. Look for a sturdy folding mechanism (cheap hinges fail after a season), proper grill spacing (1cm bars too thin and food slips through; 3cm too wide and smaller food chars to the grill), and a lid that stows clipped down. The carry-bag is worth the £15 extra over a bag-less version.
