Pocket sprung mattresses: what to look for
A pocket-sprung mattress is built around individual coil springs, each housed in its own fabric pocket so the springs work independently of each other. The point of independence is twofold: each spring contours to the body part above it for better support, and movement on one side of the bed doesn't transfer across to the other. Pocket-sprung is the British default for couples and side sleepers in particular.
Spring count is the headline spec, and the number that retailers compete on. The honest answer is that count above 1,500 stops adding much real comfort: the springs get smaller and finer rather than supporting differently. Ranges:
- 800-1,000 pockets: entry tier. Comfortable for most sleepers under 90kg. £200-£400 for a king-size.
- 1,000-2,000 pockets: mid-market. Better edge support, finer contouring. £400-£900 for a king-size.
- 2,000-3,000 pockets: upper-mid. Worth the spend if you sleep with a partner who runs significantly different weight, because the finer springs handle weight asymmetry better.
- 3,000+ pockets: premium. The maths above the 2,000 mark is mostly marketing.
Layered comfort matters as much as spring count. Most pocket-sprung mattresses ship with a foam, latex or natural-fibre comfort layer on top - this is what you actually feel when you sleep. The spring count handles the support; the comfort layer handles the surface feel.
Side-stitched edges are the upgrade that holds the mattress shape over years of sitting on the edge. Worth the £30-£60 premium where offered.
