Double mattresses: what to look for
A UK double mattress measures 135 by 190cm, which gives 67.5cm per person across two adults. Honest answer: that's roughly the width of a single bed each. Couples who can fit a king-size (150 by 200cm) into the room and the budget should usually choose the king. The double is the right answer when the bedroom genuinely won't take a king, when the bed is shared rarely (a guest room, a teenager's bed used for occasional sleepovers), or when one sleeper is a single adult with a partner who visits.
Construction follows the same logic as larger sizes. Pocket-sprung counts of 800+ are comfortable; bonnel-sprung is the budget option. Memory foam runs warm. Hybrid pocket-sprung-with-foam-comfort-layer is the modern default for most couples.
Edge support matters more on doubles than on kings. With less width, you sit on the edge more often, and a poorly-edged mattress collapses there fastest. Side-stitched or reinforced edges are worth the small spec premium.
