How wide should a TV stand be for a 55-inch TV?

A 55-inch TV measures roughly 122cm wide. The stand should be at least 122cm and ideally 30 to 40cm wider for visual balance, so 150 to 165cm is the typical pick. Stands narrower than the TV look top-heavy and risk the TV wall-mount kit being too narrow for the stand top. For 65-inch TVs, the equivalent stand width is 170 to 200cm.

How much weight can a TV cabinet hold?

Most TV stands are rated 30 to 50kg static load on the top surface. Modern 55-inch TVs weigh 15 to 20kg; 65-inch TVs 22 to 30kg. The rating is the limit, not a target. Soundbars and Sky or PlayStation boxes added on top reduce the safety margin; budget the weight before adding accessories on the shelf.

Are TV stands with brackets safer than wall-mounting?

Different risks. Stand-with-bracket holds the TV in place without drilling walls, important for rentals. Wall-mounting saves footprint and reduces tip-over risk if the household has young children. Will my soundbar fit on a TV stand?

Measure the soundbar length first (most are 90 to 120cm) and check the stand has at least 10cm of cabinet height under the TV mount point. Some stands include a dedicated soundbar shelf above or below the TV; check the product photo carefully. Soundbars wider than the TV stand overhang each side, which is acceptable for short-throw bars but looks unbalanced for long ones.

How do you hide TV cables in a stand?

Most TV cabinets include a routing channel at the back (look for a 4 to 6cm cutout). Cable conduit or sleeves (£10 to £25 from B&Q or Screwfix) bundle the wires into one neat run from TV to socket. The cleanest finish is a flush-mount socket behind the stand and a single mains lead from cabinet to wall; ask a Part P electrician to install if it does not already exist.
