How to plan a bedroom

The bedroom is the room where the smallest decisions matter most. The mattress decides whether you sleep well. The bed-frame decides whether the room reads calm or busy. The wardrobe decides whether the floor is visible or buried. Get those three right and the rest is decoration.

Bed and mattress are the headline spend and the right place to start.

  • Mattress first, frame second. The mattress is what you sleep on. A £200 frame holding a £1,200 mattress is fine; a £1,200 frame holding a £200 mattress is a long way from fine. Read our mattress buying advice on the mattresses page for the firmness, size and material decisions.
  • Storage frames vs flat frames. Ottoman beds and divan-base storage beds turn the under-bed area into wardrobe-equivalent space. Worth it in any room under about 14 square metres. Above that you can afford a flat frame.
  • Headboard scale. A headboard that's the right height for the room is one of the cheapest ways to make a bedroom read finished. Tall headboards lift small rooms; low ones suit period rooms with deep skirting and picture rails.

Wardrobes and storage set the room's bones. Built-in or fitted wardrobes are best when the budget allows because they fill awkward corners properly and don't break visual lines. Free-standing wardrobes from £200 to £800 are the practical answer in rented or transitional spaces. Look at the depth: 60cm minimum for hanging clothes, 50cm for everything else. Anything shallower and the doors won't close on a winter coat.

Lighting needs at least three layers in a bedroom. Ambient (a ceiling pendant or downlights), task (bedside reading lamps or wall-mounted swings), and accent (a low lamp on a chest of drawers or shelving). Skip any of the three and the room reads either too bright or too dim depending on the time of day. Warm bulbs (2700K) throughout, except possibly the bathroom-side dressing area where you might want neutral white for makeup.

Textiles and finish are where the room earns its calm. A heavier curtain or a blackout blind matters more here than in any other room. Bedding in two or three layered weights (sheet, light blanket, duvet) gives you year-round comfort without swapping anything out. A rug at the foot of the bed (or two flanking it) softens the wake-up walk and the acoustics of the room.
