Hypnos is one of the few British mattress makers with a Royal Warrant, which they've held since 1929. Family-run from Buckinghamshire and approaching their fifth generation, they've built a reputation as the brand that still hand-tufts mattresses with natural fillings (wool, cotton, cashmere) over pocket-sprung interiors, in an industry that has mostly moved to bonded foam and machine-tufted construction.

The mattress range is the heart of it. The Cotton Origins, Cotton Comfort and Cashmere lines run pocket-sprung counts from 1,000 up to 12,000 across king and super-king sizes, with prices that reflect both the spec and the labour. Expect £900 to £1,500 for an entry-spec king-size mattress, £1,500 to £2,500 for the upper-tier Cashmere and Wool ranges, and into £4,000+ for the bespoke Royal Comfort and Origins Eco lines. They also do divan bases, ottoman bases and headboards in matching upholstery.

This is a long-term mattress, not a short-term one. The construction is built for 12 to 15 years of daily use, the side-stitched edge holds shape on the long term, and the natural fillings settle in rather than break down. Side sleepers and traditionalists tend to land here.
